information about our matches and the
equipment required
Just for those readers who are new to the sport
of Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette Shooting,
here is a basic description.
Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette Shooting is
one of the oldest shooting match types
sanctioned by the National Rifle Association.
The basic sport consists of shooting at metal
targets at distances of 200 meters,(chickens)
300 meters,(pigs) 385 meters,(turkeys) and 500
meters(rams). 10 rounds are fired at each
distance and the target must be knocked over to
count as a hit. We have made a slight adaptation
due to the nature of our range. The Simpson Gun
range has some very hilly parts at the 500 meter
distance and it would be very time consuming to
have people going down range to reset the
targets for each shooter, so we decided to hang
the targets from platforms so that the spotter
who records hits could see them move. At our
first shoot this worked very well and we were
pleased that adaptation allowed us to be able to
stage this type of shoot.
The rifles used in the sport may be any single
shot rifle with an exposed hammer and not
over 11 lbs in weight. The typical rifles seen at
these competitions are Winchester 1885
Highwalls, Sharps 1874 Remington Rolling
Blocks. Of course, any rifle meeting the
requirements can be used at our shoots.
Although the goal is Black Powder Cartridge
we alway include a smokeless category so
that all shooters of these types of rifles have
an opportunity to participate. The 200 meter
distance is shot offhand and the other
distances are shot from a sitting position
using cross sticks. It is very challenging to hit
the targets at those distances but that is
what makes it so much fun. Don't worry if you
do not have that type of rifle. Come to the
shoot anyway to watch and maybe some kind
shooter will give you a chance to take a shot.
Most of us are kind shooters! Be sure to
contact us if you are interested. Tell a friend
and bring a friend. See you at the shoot and
keep your powder dry.
